2 Defense Comment Summer 2019 am a native Northern Californian, so my summer starts in June and lasts through October. At the ADC, summer means fun with two destination events. August 16-17, the Business of Law Seminar will be held at Squaw Creek Resort. September 20, it’s off to the wine country with the wine tasting and golf extravaganza in Napa a the Silverado Resort. Squaw Creek is a new tradition for destination CLE. It’s an opportunity to network with peers, bring family for a vacation, and learn about how to help you and your firm stay at the top of your game as we look at the Business of Law. There will be two tracks – one for managing lawyers and one for rising leaders. My favorite part is the dine-around, where everyone is invited to join for dinner. Families get to meet families. Everyone gets to make connections. It is a recharge close to home. It can be a great way to reward and invest in the next generation of leaders. Over the past few years, we have combined the Golf Tournament with a wine tasting event. One year it rained, which was fun in its own way, but typically, it is a beautiful time of year and a great opportunity to connect with clients and colleagues. For me as president, summer means I am half way through my watch. We have successfully embarked on executing the Strategic Plan adopted by the Board last year. The changes are evident: members are engaging by joining committees; content is delivered through the use of webinars and the digital flip magazine; CACI committees quickly responded to invitations to provide public comment; and we have launched a new specialty committee: Diversity. Committee membership and taking advantage of the opportunity to teach through webinars provide leadership opportunities and teaching experiences that can be vital to professional development. I encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities. The next half of my presidency, I will continue to execute the Strategic Plan. This means increasing the number of members on the committees (the goal is to have seven committee members for each substantive law group). We also will launch the Women in the Law Committee. For education, the Board’s goal is to have each committee present two Wednesday webinars this year. Our Membership Committee will begin launching regional networking events. Finally, we will end the year with the 60th Anniversary Annual Meeting. Summer Makes You a Better Lawyer Continued on page 33 President’s Message David S. Rosenbaum 2019 President
